The thirtieth most annoying Canadian

Aaron Braaten places Rick Mercer at number 30 on his list of the 40 most annoying Canadians.

"He would normally rank quite a bit higher, but has gained a bit of ’street cred’ for firing up a blog. However, I often wonder what he’s trying to accomplish with the jilted camera work used in his monologues. Maybe it’s motion sickness that has me so annoyed."

Mercer Fishing Trip

Looks like Rick is going on another big trip:

"I am going to Africa. I have the opportunity to visit some United Nations Millennium Development Goals project sites. "

And who is paying for this one? In the end, it will be us Canadians. Just smile and pay your taxes!

More not so Brainy Rick Mercer Quotes

Here are some more (not so) brainy Mercer quotes:

"In the United States I have always believed that there was a big difference between Conservative and stupid. Boy is it getting harder to prove that one by the minute."

(Not So) Brainy Quotes

BrainyQuote has some not so brainy Rick Mercer Quotes:

"If the United States were a 35-year-old man, I think he'd be in a mental institution. Violent tendencies - delusions of grandeur - medicate heavily."

Not enough pictures for Rick

By Bill Strong of StrongWorld.

"No pictures? Well, that's the funniest thing I've heard from RM in a long time - but somehow I don't think he was trying to be funny! - he's just letting us know what his reading level really is."

Rick Mercer: Candian Commie-median?

zodinator! has a few words:

You can tell the difference between real comedians and CBC commie-medians. Real comedians are known outside Canada for being funny (Jim Carrey, Dan Akroyd, Jim Candy, etc, etc). CBC flunky commie-medians are only known outside Canada for being insulting (especially to the USA).

I thinkie thinkie he is going to find working the blogging audience a little harder than manipulating the brainwashed audience of a state run propaganda machine. Bloggers tend to look beneath the surface and beyond the rhetoric.

Rick Mercer's sense of humour

Burkean Canuck says:

That Rick Mercer is a whining socialist with his trotters in the trough, er, on the CBC payroll, doesn't really bother me . . . much.I just wish the guy who is the on-air talent for a show billed as comedy was funny.Once a show would be enough.

Hmmm

All things Canadian reports:

Rick Mercer registered jasonkenney.org thinking it's related to Don Boudria leaving donboudria.ca open for others to control.

Well, what should we direct the following to - afterall, Rick's an international sensation and should be in charge of his media empire....

Rick Mercer responsible for anti-American bias?

Political Junkie has an interesting theory:

I have no scientific bias to back this up but when I was reading through the posts over at the Mercer-nary the thought occurred to me that Rick Mercer might be responsible for a huge amount of anti-American bias in Canadian society!

Does everyone else remember the segment called "Talking to Americans"? That was when Rick toured the U.S., made a dumb statement about Canada (like prime minister Horton scoring a double-double) and recorded the retarded comments that would then ensue. Several points worth noting here. First is that even in the Democratic hotbed of Harvard University, political science profs would have NO idea of anything Canadian. Democrats are supposed to be the smart ones remember. Not like those evil anti-abortion anti-gay marriage Christian rednecks from Texas. Second point would be - would you get different answers if you asked enough Canadians the same questions? There was never any mention of how many people had to participate to get 10 stupid responses.
But lastly, the most important point that this raises is ... Canada is becoming increasingly irrelevant. Not just in the US but pretty much around the world. Soft power doesn't work. And you can only run on your Vimy Ridge/Juno Beach/Korean War reputation before people start to ask questions like "that's great but what have you done in the last 60 years?". Why would Americans care to learn about Canada. We're the country that loves to generate most of our GDP selling things to the US and then criticize everything they do.

But my original point was that Rick Mercer was using taxpayer money to flog anti-Americanism. That's nuts and just another reason to cut off the CBC.

State-run CBC employee steals website domain name from Conservative to mock him

From ProudToBeCanadian :

An employee of the state-run CBC division of the Liberal Party has played a prank, yet again, on another Conservative Party MP. (Hat tip: Exile from our forums).

This time he’s doing what the Liberals indignantly decried as unethical and repugnant: he registered the expired domain name of a sitting MP, just as the leader of an interest group did to a Liberal Party MP earlier this spring. I denounced the move in this blog when it happened.

The DefendMarriage.ca group wasn’t an employee of the state—as Rick Mercer is the state’s official comedian—however.

State comedian Rick Mercer is not funny, he’s just another liberal. And I’ld love to check the receipts he turns in to the CBC for expenses. Note that when you check with WhoIs.net, the registration isn’t in Rick Mercer’s name, but rather that of one of the internet’s “hidden owner” companies.

Registrant Name:Internet accountant
Registrant Organization:

Registrant Street2:care of Network Solutions
Registrant Street3:
Registrant City:Herndon
Registrant State/Province:VA
Registrant Postal Code:20172

I used to be a fan...

Waking Up On Planet X has this to say:

...You're being paid by the CBC, ergo the government, ergo the Liberals (and now, as well, the NDP). Your bias is showing. I could live with it if you slammed Jacko & Gilles as much as you've slammed the CPC. But you haven't. And the Liberals. What, you're telling me they are perfect? The most you can say is that Paul stutters? You haven't taken on Screechin' Annie? Or Joe "those KKK" Volpe? And call yourself a Canadian comedian? I'd call you something else, but my daughter might read this.

What, are you worried about your job?

Stick to what you know. Either that, or even up the shots and show you have no bias.
As a taxpayer, I guess that makes me a quasi-employer, doesn't it? Which is kinda weird. But maybe that means you'll either pay attention, or go anonymous, or, perhaps, just away.

Just a thought, but "real" blogs allow comments.

Wimp...

Rick Mercer's Blog

Peter's Point gets some photoshop payback:

I took great interest at Rick Mercer’s new blog and at first thought it was pretty amusing how he one-upped Jason Kenny by buying a website with his name on it. Bravo, good for you Rick. And the “Fun with Photoshop” things with Harper are a hoot, really!

Unfortunately, just like the CBC, Rick’s comedy wears a bit thin after seeing the same thing over and over. And like the CBC, it’s pretty obvious that Rick would never bite the hand that feeds him. So although I did have his blog bookmarked, I think I can move now and leave one of Paul’s puppies to chew the slipper on his own.

Oh, before I depart from this subject, I was going to get a Rick Mercer site and have some fun with Photoshop but that seemed a bit childish to me. Besides, I can have fun with Photoshop right here!

Watch Out For Mercer

Back Off Government has an exellent post:

"Rick Mercer, the comedian, is out to destroy Harper by turning him into a national joke...

Mercer was legendary for his gag against former leader Stockwell Day and the old Canadian Alliance's Citizen's initiated referendum policy. The policy would allow a national referendum to occur if a certain percentage of the population signed a petition asking for one on a particular question. The vote would not be binding, and would require the motion to be ratified by parliament. Apparently Mercer doesn't believe that letting the people have a say in contentious issues in a national referenda is a good idea. No, populism is evil to Rick Mercer. So he started a campaign to get Stockwell Day's name changed to "Doris Day" by getting Canadians to sign on online petition. The gag was a classic. And it destroyed Stockwell Day at a time when he didn't already need someone else to make even more of a joke out of him than the national media had already made him....

He's a Liberal. And he's funny. And he's dangerous. Stop laughing people - because Mercer's not laughing with us, he's laughing at us."

This Blog Has Too Few Laughs

The Invisible Hand adds:

Mercer's complaint with Kenney is as follows...

"Anyway while the speaker was admonishing Jason for such unparliamentarily language as “ignorant” I started thinking “What are the chances that Jason Kenney is so stunned that he would call another MP ignorant for not having registered his domain name when he hasn’t bothered to register his own?”

...except that's not what Kenney said. He didn't criticize Boudria for not registering the domain, he criticized him for complaining to Parliament about something that is in no way Parliament's jurisdiction, instead of using the proper channels. Of course, if Kenney had then staged a big protest over Mercer's registration of jasonkenney.org, it would have been very hypocritical. But he didn't; Kenney seems to have taken it with good humour....

Rick Mercer is guilty of violating the first rule of satire: it has to be funny. It's okay to be one-sided or even partisan as long as you follow this, which Mercer failed to do.

Question of The Day

Remplia Prime has a question:

"What is the “Rick” in Rick Mercer’s name short for? Perhaps…..Richard? If you can source your answer for me, please do."

Perhaps Prick? Dick? Schtick? Sick? Send your answers here.

Liberal blood-dog - Rick Mercer

According to the "voice of Liberals" the Liberal Underground, it's funny that mercer is a taxpayer subsidized Liberal propaganda machine:

Rick Mercer To Seek Conservative Leadership?June 27, 2005
They say politics is a blood sport and far be it for me to argue with that theology. However, if you doubt it, just look at the recent attacks on the Conservative party of Canada, or for the matter, the direct attacks, by Canadian funny-man, and liberal blood-dog, Rick Mercer, on Stephen Harper.
Now what does this have to do with Rick Mercer and the leadership of the Conservative Party of Canada? The LU lets the cat out of the bag in an exclusive. Mercer for leader - coming to CBC this fall.
The LU has learned that Rick Mercer's next piece of comic relief will include a vow to seek the leadership of the Conservative Party of Canada.
In a brilliant political move, the one-man Conservative wrecking ball intends to travel across Canada during his summer break from "Monday Report" and tour the BBQ circuit to drum up support for his bid to topple the CPC's embattled leader.
Mercer's cross country trek is set to start next month in the Yukon, while the BBQ weather is favourable. The journey is set to end sometime in August in Mercer's home province of Newfoundland and Labrador.
"Talking to Conservatives" a special "Report" is tentatively set to air on the CBC sometime in October or November, later this year.

Do you think it's funny? You're paying for it!

Sir, I don't much like your tone, that supercilious sneer you wear

Ravishing Light says regarding buying the domain jasonkenney.org, and redirecting it to the Marxist-Leninist Party website:

"Me, I think that's somewhere near the full-blown, knee-slapping, gut-busting, so-funny-I-forgot-to-laugh hilarity of calling Stockwell Day "Doris" for months on end, but others may disagree.(Not that this is a bad thing. I'd rather Mercer was being a smarmy jackass online, than on TV, with the full backing of and exposure granted by the Mother Corp.)"

www.jasonkenney.org

Political Junkie has a good point about registering www.jasonkenney.org:

Does anyone else find it interesting that Rick Mercer is having a good time berating Jason Kenney for not registering www.jasonkenney.org ? Doesn't .org ususally get reserved for organizations and individuals would use .ca or sometimes .com? I know Jason's been apt to put on a few pounds but to call him an organization would be a bit of a stretch.

Mercer-nary?

And from the Lunch Pale : (Wow - they came up with the name Mercer-nary too! How many other people see Rick Mercer as a hired gun for the Liberal Party?

What's up with Rickie - all the funny Canadian comedians are out in the world making funny movies/ tv shows in Hollywood while he is pimping Kyoto for the feds and collecting a government paycheck for unfunny attacks on anything conservative. Now he has an unfunny blog attacking conservatives.

Your One-Tonne Challenge

And from the Blog Quebecois :

Rick Mercer as quoted in the National Post:

I ask you: Is there anything more pathetic than sitting indoors while the sun is shining reading a blog written by Monte Solberg?

Why, yes; yes there is: reading Rick Mercer's blog.

Rick Mercer - CBC Expenses

Another Blogger Dust my Broom has this to say about Mercer

“I wanted something that screamed Jason,” Mercer says.

How about Canadians screaming to see your expense reports? Rick Mercer is running his own blog and has bought Jason Kenney’s domain name and forwarded it to the Marxist Leninist party of Canada. Joel Johannesen shows that the registration for the site is not exactly in Rick Mercer’s name.

Fun is fun but I don’t feel like paying for this jackassism. Also does anyone find it amusing that he links a conservative to a new liberal philosophy? Mercer - better get out your manifesto.
